AMF Threadworks Moose Mitts (A.K.A Pogies) Moose Mitts are a handle bar mitten (AKA bar mit, pogie, climit) that stays on your bike and you slip your hand into during colder weather. The unique design allows you to wear thin gloves down into winter temperatures...Which provided better dexterity when you need it. The open volume creates a “hot box” where the heat from your hands warms the space. We have some unique patented designs that are specific to our Moose Mitts (pogies). For example the boning keep their shape, 3M reflective stripe provides 500 candle power for safety. We’ve added an internal pocket (made from recycled jerseys) to keep your energy bar from becoming frozen. We added a closure to the hand opening so when you park your bike outside or transport it the handlebars can stay dry and trap in hand warmth in. History of our Moose Mitts: My wife Abby and I began making these over 10 years ago, before we had a bike shop. I got the idea from my friend Kurt who (along with his Mom) had offered Pogies to myself and other local cyclist. Kurt and his mom never made them again so I got his blessing to make a few more pair for other locals…But with some changes and updates. There were a few things I really wanted to see and we made about 6 pair using some cheap canvas and iron on reflective. I offered them to several local riders and got feedback on how to make them better. Abby and I worked on getting quality materials and adjusting the shape a little to fit the use. We are not on V6 and were always looking for ways to make them better for you – the cyclist. We held a naming contest locally on the MMBA (Michigan Mountain Bike Association) forums. MarryAnn Martin won with the name “Moose Mitts” and claimed her free pair as a prize. After we opened the shop (Trail’s Edge Cyclery), these became a winter project for our staff. We felt it was a great way to keep the guys working during the slow months and keep some income flowing for the store. Now 10 years later our Moose Mitts have a great reputation and following. We even developed a road bike version with feedback from local cyclist and customers. We are very proud of our moose Mitts and hope you’ll enjoy them on every cold ride. We still make these from scratch in our Plymouth location in the back of the bike shop. There are 3 of us in the store so we make them as fast as we can, while the store is open all winter as well. We work in batches to keep the orders flowing as the popularity of these increases every year. We appreciate the orders and everyone's patience with us as we create some of the most durable and unique cycling apparel you'll ever find. Hand made by 3 sets of hands in our store for over 8 years. |
