AMF Threadworks Moose Mitts (A.K.A Pogies)

Moose Mitts are a handle bar mitten (AKA bar mit, pogie, climit) that stays on your bike and you slip your hand into during colder weather. The unique design allows you to wear thin gloves down into winter temperatures...Which provided better dexterity when you need it. The open volume creates a “hot box” where the heat from your hands warms the space.
We have some unique patented designs that are specific to our Moose Mitts (pogies). For example the boning keep their shape, 3M reflective stripe provides 500 candle power for safety. We’ve added an internal pocket (made from recycled jerseys) to keep your energy bar from becoming frozen. We added a closure to the hand opening so when you park your bike outside or transport it the handlebars can stay dry and trap in hand warmth in.

History of our Moose Mitts:

My wife Abby and I began making these over 10 years ago, before we had a bike shop.  I got the idea from my friend Kurt who (along with his Mom) had offered Pogies to myself and other local cyclist. Kurt and his mom never made them again so I got his blessing to make a few more pair for other locals…But with some changes and updates. There were a few things I really wanted to see and we made about 6 pair using some cheap canvas and iron on reflective. I offered them to several local riders and got feedback on how to make them better. Abby and I worked on getting quality materials and adjusting the shape a little to fit the use. We are not on V6 and were always looking for ways to make them better for you – the cyclist. We held a naming contest locally on the MMBA (Michigan Mountain Bike Association)  forums. MarryAnn Martin won with the name “Moose Mitts” and claimed her free pair as a prize.

After we opened the shop (Trail’s Edge Cyclery), these became a winter project for our staff. We felt it was a great way to keep the guys working during the slow months and keep some income flowing for the store. Now 10 years later our Moose Mitts have a great reputation and following. We even developed a road bike version with feedback from local cyclist and customers. We are very proud of our moose Mitts and hope you’ll enjoy them on every cold ride.

We still make these from scratch in our Plymouth location in the back of the bike shop. There are 3 of us in the store so we make them as fast as we can, while the store is open all winter as well. We work in batches to keep the orders flowing as the popularity of these increases every year. We appreciate the orders and everyone's patience with us as we create some of the most durable and unique cycling apparel you'll ever find
.

Hand made by 3 sets of hands in our store for over 8 years.

Thanks
Trail's Edge Staff

Standard Version Mitts:
These are essentially a large mitten that covers the handlebars and bar ends of any flat bar bike (riser bars too). These stay attached to the handlebar, you simply slip your hands inside and keep them warm. Shift and brake with ease while using your normal biking gloves. These type of bike mitts have been a used by iditasport and winter riding enthusiast for years.

FYI the Standard Version works great on Hiking / XC Ski Poles too..

Super HiVis Standard Version - Hunter Orange with double the reflective.
After many request for a high visibility version we are now offering a limited run we've dubbed the "SupaHiVis". These will be made of a florescent orange body with a black strip and double the reflective as our normal Moose Mitts. These still have the same features as the standard model...But Much Much brighter. These also require more sewing and higher cost of materials so they are a little more $ than the standard black version.

If you have ordered already and want to change to these please let us know ASAP.

Drop Bar Version Mitts:
Several years ago we developed these as requests from the roadies and commuters flooded in. We took our time and tested the design out locally here in Michigan and around the country. V3 is getting some great reviews and keeping everyone's digits toasty. The Road version is more open in the back end, but allows the rider to ride in the Drops, Hoods, and Flats of any drop bar. Made of 1000 Denier Cordura and Fleece lined your fingers will be warmer longer and keep you riding during the colder months. These work with any style shifter - even old school barcons.

Ordering Note 1/4/12:
We have been pushing out the orders pretty quick lately, but still estimating 2-3 week turn around for new orders.  But we are also moving our location over the next few weeks which may add some time to the production cycle.

Super HiVis version now available for ordering in the flat bar version only (limited production run). We still make these by hand too. But these take a little longer to make and require more expensive material, so they are a little more $. But if you commute or ride on open hunting grounds these add a ton of visibility to you.

Details:
1000 Denier Cordura
Provides a strong, abrasion resistant material, which is also coated with wind/water proof membrane.

Special Shape
From the beginning we developed the shape of our Moose Mitts to provide ample dexterity, easy to install and use, and keep your hands warm. We've even used a special boning for over 10 years to help accomplish this.

Fleece Lining

Provides a warm environment for those digits. Once the internal area gets warm from your hands they stay that way.

3M Reflective Stripe
500 candle power reflective material sewn across the top provides a little added safety for riding at night

Standard Internal Pocket:
(Standard Version Only)
Standard in all Flat Bar Moose Mitts, this pocket is a good place to keep your energy bars warm enough to eat. It can also be used to store chemical hand warmers for added warmth.

Closure Velcro (Standard Version Only)
Two small Velcro pieces added to the bottom and inside top allow you to close your MTB Moose Mitts when not being used. This is especially useful when the bike is sitting outside in the rain or snow...It is a good way to help keep heat in to avoid re-heating the internal chamber.
