Holdridge Lakes R.A. Trail Info

Trail Description Holdridge Lakes is one if the newer Michigan trails, Only a handful of years old. There are several trails here for all skill levels. There are 3 main loops in this area, North Loop, West Loop, and the East Loop. The main trail (Gruber's Grind) is slow and technical. the configuration isn't much different than Highland, but it gets much less traffic. If you are looking for speed head to Pontiac Lake or Poto! If you want to test your handling abilities try this place.

The North Loop:
2 miles of pleasant off road trails, easy enough to take the kids on, yet fun enough to enjoy.

The West Loop:
Total length can reach 5.5 miles if you do all 3 technical loops. The main section is fairly rolling with the occasional stump rock or log, but the technical loops add more log crossings and tighter handling. Near the middle of this loop is "The Wall" a serious climb for anyone on a bike. The entire trip around the West loop will take you about 45 minuets, so bring lots of food and water

The East Loop: (Gruber's Grind)
Total length can reach 15.8 miles, and one of the hardest trails I have been on. The entire loop will take around 3 hours so Make sure to carry extra provisions (tubes, food, water). If you are feeling secure in your handling and riding skills, this trail will be a wake up call. There are miles of short steep climbs and decents, rocks, stumps, and log crossings. The log crossings are endless, there were several normal sized ones and a few large ones. The other trails in the area (Pontiac, Highland) had made me a bit lazy when it came to crossing logs, I managed to bottom out on almost every one. Grubers Grind, even though it is unrelenting in chalenging it does allow you to bail after about 7 miles or so. There is fairly well marked return path which brings you back to the dirt road.
Just like Highland this course will make you stop, shift, turn, brake, and balance for hours, this is guaranteed to mentally exhausted you and fatigue your upper body, rather than your legs. Once you finish the reward will settle in, as you make up stories about near death experiences, and cleaning seemingly impassable sections. This place will create a challenge for years to come. Many of this trail should not be ridden alone or after dusk (without a headlamp). The state does require a parking permit, if you need one they can be purchased by filling out the envelope (with money) and placing it in the daily registration canister.

We hope you will remember the Guidelines for safety and etiquette.
