Safety tips for MTB riding during hunting season

Having grown up with a family that hunts and being an avid cyclist I wanted to share some knowledge to keep everyone safe during the hunting season. First thing is to define and understand the 2 major types of Deer hunting in Michigan.

Bow hunting:
It is extremely unlikely that you will ever get hit by an arrow...or even see a bow hunter. Bow hunters hide in the forest many times in what is called a "Tree Stand" above eyesight of deer and people. They are very quiet and sit for hours waiting for the perfect opportunity. Bow hunters typically will not shoot at moving targets, and have a limited range. The skill required for bow hunting also makes it less likely that any randon arrow will ever come past your wheel.

Rifle Season:
Usually pretty short (2 weeks in most cases) but potentailly more hazardous to be on the trail. Rifle hunting allows a much greater range of aim and fire due to the gun. Like Bow hunters rifle hunters usually hunt at dawn and dusk. While rifle hunters have the ablity to fire at moving targets due to the nature of the weapon, seasoned hunters will usually avoid this and take cautious aim. But there are thousands of novice hunters every year who may not be as patient when they think your a deer.

  • Know what season it is (CHECK HERE)
  • Avoid riding during the hunting season - visit your local bike shop instead :-)
  • If you must ride, locate the State Parks which are hunt free zones.
  • If you must ride where hunting is permitted
1.) Ride during the daylight hours 10 - 2 is ideal.
2.) Wear bright colored clothes. A hunters orange saftey vest from K-Mart is not a bad investment.
3.) Avoid any browns or white color clothes. White looks like a tail of a deer running away
4.) Be aware of your surroundings. If you notice people on the trail with guns...be friendly

Please remember while out on the trail, hunter's have been around longer and play an important roll for Michigan's DNR. Hunting License fees have paid for most of our parks systems. Lucky hunters also play a great roll in animal population control. Please only call the DNR to report poaching, or if you are personally threatened. Please use your best judgment

Today's Tip

Childseat Precautions – When using a childseat, keep in mind that most models handle children up to 40 pounds. After that, the child should be carried in a trailer. It’s important to assemble and install childseats carefully so that they can’t sway or slip while you’re riding. Also, to prevent a serious fall, always support the bike while putting your child into the seat and never rely on the kickstand alone to support the weight of your child and bike! If you have any questions, please bring your bike in so we can take a look and offer advice.
